Mr. David A. Pickler,
J.D., CFP, ChFC
District 5
EmailBio

David A. Pickler, J.D., CFP, ChFC

Philanthropic Leader
Public Schools Official and Advocate
Founder and CEO, Pickler Wealth Advisors
Founder and Senior Partner, The Pickler Law Firm

David Pickler believes community service to be an essential element of citizenship – for both individuals and businesses. Volunteerism, Community Engagement, Civic Leadership, and Philanthropic Investment have framed the pillars of his life over the past quarter century. These same attributes are imbedded into the DNA of Pickler Wealth Advisors and The Pickler Law Firm (Pickler Companies).

David personally is involved with numerous activities that benefit youth. These include extensive involvement with Shelby County Schools, as both a leader of the school board and a philanthropist, support for the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf, and multiple responsibilities with the Boy Scouts of America and local Scout organizations.

David has served as a member of the Shelby County Board of Education since 1998 and was elected Chairman by his fellow board members in 1999, a position he continues to hold. During this time Shelby County Schools has proven themselves as the best large school system in Tennessee. Under his leadership, Shelby County Schools has the highest graduation rate – 96.3% – of any of the large school systems in Tennessee and is one of only three systems in Tennessee to receive all A's in Academic Achievement for four consecutive years on the Tennessee Report Card.

The Tennessee School Boards Association has recognized David as School Board Member of the Year and the National School Boards Association has presented him with the Distinguished Service Award an unprecedented three times.

As School Board Chairman, one of David's first initiatives was the creation of the Shelby County Schools Education Foundation to which he has donated his entire stipend as a school board member.

Since its founding, the Foundation has provided well over $1 million in financial support. David also has endowed two annual giving programs through the foundation, The David A. Pickler Distinguished Technology Educator Award, which provides technology grants to teachers who demonstrate creativity in the use of technology in their classrooms, and The Pickler Community Leader Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated superior academic achievement and community engagement.

The Memphis Oral School for the Deaf (MOSD) is another institution with which David actively is involved. The mission of MOSD is to empower deaf children to LISTEN, LEARN, AND TALK. Once listening skills are developed a child can begin to develop speech and language skills that will allow them to communicate in the mainstream. The MOSD serves children in pre-K and Kindergarten. Once completing the program these students can be mainstreamed into classes with students their age. In addition to benefitting each child, the savings from mainstreaming these students through high school is substantial. While tuition is more than $40,000 per year per student, substantial financial support is available for needy students and no child has been turned away due to an inability to pay.

David has been a member of the MOSD Board since 2000, and was tasked with developing the school's first permanent home. He negotiated an agreement with the Kingsway Christian Church to permit the school to build on the church campus and organized the highly successful Capital Campaign that raised more than $2 million.

He then led a second campaign to fund a $125,000 playground designed and built to accommodate the students' unique needs. Presently, David is leading the campaign to build a $3 million endowment for the school's ongoing support, and the effort already has raised over $1 million. In recognition of his work on behalf of MOSD, the Memphis Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals honored David with the 2010 Crystal Award for Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser.

As a Boy Scout Leader, David's responsibilities have ranged from Cubmaster to Vice President of the Chickasaw Council. One of his most significant accomplishments was re-establishing ScoutBase, a National Jamboree quality event for the 26,000 Scouts in the 19 counties comprising the Council. In recognition of his leadership, David has been named to the Order of the Arrow, Honor Vigil and received the Silver Beaver and Golden Eagle, among other awards.

An active Kiwanian, during his year as President of the Germantown Club, David was recognized as a Distinguished Club President and Distinguished Kiwanian and the Club was honored as the Most Outstanding Kiwanis Club in the three-state District. He also served as District Governor and created the first District Major Emphasis Initiative, the Kiwanis AED Project, a program to place at least one automated External Defibrillator in every school in Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Tennessee. In August of 2009, an AED placed at a Shelby County school saved the life of Firefighter Kenneth Richmond, a parent of two Shelby County students.

David has also assumed leadership roles and provided significant financial and endowment support for Kiwanis children's charities. He has served on the Board of the Kiwanis District Foundation and has been honored for his philanthropy with numerous awards, including the River of Life Fellow, John T. Roberts Fellow, George F. Hixson Fellow, Hixson Ambassador, and Heritage Society membership.

While David focuses his individual efforts on supporting the youth of the community, the Pickler Companies support programs that improve the quality of life for everyone in Shelby County. For example, the firm is a major sponsor for the Tenth Anniversary Season of The IRIS Orchestra at the Germantown Performing Arts Center. Renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma opened the season as the first of five special guests performing with the orchestra. A sixth performance features the Tennessee Shakespeare Company.

In keeping with the theme of community enrichment, PWA also is a corporate sponsor of The Orpheum Theater. The Orpheum, known as "The South's Finest Theater" following its construction in 1928, had fallen into disrepair before its acquisition and restoration by a non-profit group. Today, the Orpheum, with the support of sponsors such as PWA, brings Broadway to Memphis, as well as top comedians, musical groups, and classic cinema. In addition to the corporate sponsorship, David serves as a member of the Memphis Development Foundation, the non-profit organization that owns and operates the Orpheum.

A third major PWA philanthropy is the Memphis Redbirds Foundation, parent of the Memphis Redbirds AAA baseball team. In addition to bringing high quality professional baseball to Memphis, the Foundation funds programs that support baseball programs in the Memphis City Schools as well as summer baseball for inner city youth.

To sustain these philanthropic efforts, David created the Pickler Foundation to perpetuate his support for youth, Scouting, and other programs to enhance his community's quality of life.

David is a regularly published author writing on business and public policy topics. He is a co-author of "Memphis, Profiles in Courage," published by MainStreet Books, a look at the lives and ministries of those who have had a profound impact on the Memphis community. David is a regular contributor to The Journal, the official publication of the Tennessee School Boards Association, and to The Main Street Journal. He also has authored op-eds appearing in The Memphis Commercial Appeal.

In February 2011, Barron's Magazine honored David as one of America's Top 1000 Financial Advisors. He was the only Financial Advisor in West Tennessee named to this prestigious list.

In May 2011, Registered Rep magazine, the leading publication for Investment Advisor in the industry, honored David as recipient of the magazine's 31st Annual Altruism Award. David was one of only ten named nationwide.
